According to a scientific and field assessment reported by Arab News, heavy bombardment and chemical spraying have extensively contaminated agricultural soil, water resources, and crops across southern Lebanon — a finding that cuts to the heart of every cooperative we work with. The assessment points to severe disruptions in national food production cycles and to long-term soil rehabilitation challenges now facing the farming communities who feed us.
The contamination runs deeper than one season
The damage is not a single visible scar. It stretches from the topsoil our growers depend on into the irrigation sources that carry life through every orchard row. When residues settle into the earth, the effects are not measured in a single harvest — they linger in the blemish-free apples our EU buyers expect, in the crisp greens that anchor cooperative contracts, in the yields that keep families through the winter.
At the same time, the conflict has reshaped the landscape around that soil. Recent reporting describes a buffer zone along the border where access to farmland has been barred and civilian homes and infrastructure demolished in border towns. More than 1.2 million people have been displaced since the fighting began. Fields that once fed into our packing houses now sit inside restricted areas, and the routes our trucks once traveled are no longer reliable. For cooperatives built on steady supply, that is not an inconvenience — it is an existential reshuffle.
What our cooperatives build next
The path forward begins with shared testing. Cooperatives across the south can coordinate soil and water sampling through one framework, pooling results so that every member — not just the largest — holds clear data on what their land actually needs. From there, rehabilitation maps in stages: cover crops to begin rebuilding organic matter, targeted amendments where contamination runs deepest, and the gradual reintroduction of sensitive crops only once baseline levels are independently verified.
Buyers will need to hear our story plainly. Standards bodies expect clean product, but they also respond to documented recovery. A cooperative that presents its contamination data alongside its remediation plan earns something a generic export never will — trust that outlasts a single season.
